My name is Jerry Banks, and I’m a storyteller. If I could identify one villain in my narrative, it would be overconfidence in myself. Life has thrown some big curveballs at me, and as much as I’ve stumbled along the way, I’ve not only survived; I’ve thrived. Whenever I’ve made mistakes, I can see how I was overconfident in my dreams or in myself and didn’t do enough research or study. As a young person, I thought I could jump off cliffs and build my wings on the way down. After getting burned several times, I learned balance in my decision-making.
I’m a business guy to my core and have spent my career in real estate investing, crunching numbers and making deals. Over time I’ve managed over $2 billion in transactions and over three million square feet of property. I’ve also always had an entrepreneurial spirit. At age fourteen, I taught myself how to draw home plans and started getting paid for my work. At age fifteen, I bought, remodeled, and sold a home. I did the same thing with some land at age eighteen, then became the youngest person in Iowa to get a real estate license. I was twenty-four when I started my first company, Century 21 Banks Realty. In my thirties, I owned thirteen pizza franchises.
I’ve failed at retirement more times than I’d like to admit. So I gave up and got back to work, but not how I used to work.
I’m a business guy to my core. I spent my career in real estate investing, crunching numbers, and making deals.
Throughout my career, I managed $2 billion in transactions and more than 3 million square feet of property!
But what I’m doing now isn’t just about business; it’s about life.
One of my greatest joys is helping and seeing other people succeed, from my professional consulting business to my support of Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa, which works to improve the quality of life of women and their families near where I grew up.
And in my next act, i wanted to do more of that.
So here’s my goal: Help you achieve peace, happiness, and whatever success means to you sooner — and hopefully a whole lot more easily — than I did.
Every one of us has an internal GPS system that can point us toward success and happiness.
It operates on what I call the four Ds plus 1.
Your dream sets the destination. Everything else helps get you there.
I’ll tell you more about the 4Ds + 1 in my signature talk, Fire Up Your Internal GPS.
"Jerry is a veteran of real estate investing and consulting. He’s quick to see the big picture while also being extremely good at number crunching and details."
"Having grown up in real estate, Jerry has a keen eye for value and opportunity, but he always recognizes that price matters and risk must be appropriately rewarded. I hold his judgment in high regard."
The title says it all: Life serves us shit on a regular basis, and we have to accept our heaping portion and enjoy it as best we can.
The stories in my first book, Eat Shit & Smile, are all about resilience, in business and in life. They’re about how I dealt with the hard stuff, learned from my failures, and succeeded in spite (or because!) of it all.
